Reducing Friction in Political Action
As America marches ever closer to fascism, people are scared. Activism can offer cathartic relief and affect real positive change. An effective strategy is to focus on hyperlocal issues and to persuade local constituents to advocate to their local representatives. The primary challenge is friction. Do you know the email address for your state representative? Most people don’t. Asking someone to perform that lookup creates friction. People who wanted to contact their representative don’t follow through. Even fewer people will draft a note other than a form letter. This talk walks through how I protyped a system that can translate a Louisiana user’s full name, geo location, or address to their elected official’s contact info and utilizes ChatGPT to draft a semi-personal email. The goal is to give local advocacy organizations the ability to convert more clicks into action by reducing the work required by a constituent.
