Project Mayhem: Defending New Orleans from a Private Spy Network

There are more than 5,000 private spy cameras in New Orleans, operated by a former NOPD officer with zero oversight or accountability. Project Nola uses banned Chinese facial recognition technology (FRT) to spy on every man, woman, and child in New Orleans. The network was created to bypass local privacy ordinances. It can target people based on your face, clothing, and tattoos. The Supreme Court ruled that race, clothing, and tattoos are enough to be arrested by ICE. New Orleans survived Trump’s invasion, but his armed masked agents continue to march across America. In this talk, we detail how local activists fight mass surveillance and provide you with the tools to join the resistance in your community. Attendees will leave with a threat model, a research toolkit, and a case study in how to fight AI powered mass surveillance.
