The Drone Renaissance 2: #DronesForGood

This session is a maker-friendly blueprint for rapid, community-scale “out-of-band” comms when conventional networks fail. We start with a real problem: degraded comms collapse the responder OODA loop, and small organizations lose the ability to coordinate people, resources, and safety checks. From there, we walk through a proven pairing:

  • FPV drones as fast, flexible delivery and elevation tools (drop-off payloads, “perch-and-stare” overwatch, antenna lift options).

  • Meshtastic LoRa as low-bit-rate, long-range messaging with GPS location sharing that can be deployed incrementally and maintained by volunteers.

We will discuss a practical decision framework for drone platforms (3D-printed frames, power systems, payload mounts, and weatherization) and mesh design patterns (topologies, beacon settings, and coverage planning). We’ll also break down two fieldable hardware “SKUs”: handheld nodes for victims/teams and solar repeaters for persistent coverage, including enclosure ruggedization and heat/humidity survival considerations.
